Hiking

Hiking is a phenomenally pure experience in Waterton Lakes, with great terrain, skilled guides, abundant interpretive trails and loops that suit all skill levels. Add some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world and you get a phenomenal outdoor experience that anyone can enjoy. Parks Canada takes excellent care of the trail systems in Waterton, many of which become cross country ski and snowshoe routes in the winter months.

There are 255 km (191 miles) of trails to explore in Waterton Lake National Park. They range in difficulty from a short stroll to steep treks of several days duration. Trails are provided for a variety of users, including hikers, horse riders and bicyclists.

Trails in Waterton also lead to extensive trail systems in Montana's Glacier National Park and in British Columbia's Akamina-Kishinina Provincial Park.

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Interpretive Hike
This 14 km interpretive hike winds along the western shore of Waterton Lake, stopping at the International Boundary for a moving ceremony called "Hands across the Border". It carries on to Goat Haunt, Montana, where hikers return to Waterton by boat. This is a long but gentle trail with plenty of rest stops for hikers of all abilities. This hike is held every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 a.m. from June 28th to August 30th. Space is limited so reserve your spot by calling 1.403.5133.

Waterton's trails can be explored almost any time of the year but it's important to keep in mind that this National Park is conserved as much as possible in a natural wilderness state. Please ensure that you stay safe and aware of the natural hazards that may await you on your journey. If undertaking an activity that may be hazardous (mountain or rock climbing, or hiking alone) it is a good idea to register your trip with the Warden's office.
